Mike Reynolds

“Art is about telling stories that matter”

I’m Mike Reynolds, a Marine Corps Combat Artist Officer, Artist, and visual storyteller. My mission is simple: to capture and preserve the untold stories of those who serve, using the power of art to convey the human experiences that define the military journey.

With over 24 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps, my career has taken me to combat zones, training exercises, and some of the most extraordinary environments imaginable. My art is shaped by these experiences, each one contributing to my approach to storytelling. As a self-taught artist, I work primarily in charcoal and oil paint, though I use a range of media—including graphite, ink, and digital formats—to bring each story to life.

As a Marine Corps Combat Artist since 2021, I’ve had the honor of embedding with Marines in both training and combat environments. These experiences have deepened my understanding of what it means to serve and led me to focus on the emotional depth of military life. My work isn’t just about creating a likeness—it’s about capturing the moments, the raw emotions, and the unspoken stories that often go untold.

My Military Career: A Journey That Shaped My Art

A life in service, a vision in art

My journey in the Marine Corps began in 2002 when I enlisted as an Ammunition Technician. Over the years, I have held multiple roles that shaped my perspective on leadership, sacrifice, and camaraderie. I served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where I deployed twice to Iraq, and Operation Enduring Freedom where I deployed twice to Afghanistaion. I became a Chief Warrant Officer and later advanced to the rank of LDO Captain, and currently Major. My work as an Ammunition Technicaian and Officer and my time spent managing complex operations directly influenced the discipline, focus, and dedication I bring to my art.

In 2021, I applied for and was selected to join the Marine Corps Combat Art Program (MCCAP). This was a pivotal moment in my career as it allowed me to combine my passion for art with my military background. Through the MCCAP, I’ve been able to travel to various training locations and combat zones, where I’ve embedded with Marines to document their stories visually. These experiences have given me a rare and intimate view of military life, and I’ve made it my mission to preserve these stories through art.

Art: Inspired by Duty

For me, art isn’t just about technique; it’s about storytelling. Every piece I create reflects the experiences of those who serve—whether it’s a portrait of a Marine in action or a larger narrative piece that captures the bond of brotherhood. My art is driven by the belief that military service has a profound, lasting impact on both the individual and the collective.

Through my work, I seek to communicate the intensity of combat, the quiet moments of reflection, and the unspoken emotions that define the military experience. I believe that art has the power to convey not just the surface-level details, but also the underlying stories that often go unnoticed.

Combat Art: Perserving a Legacy

As a Combat Artist Officer, I’ve had the privilege of documenting the lives and legacies of Marines. I focus on capturing the strength, sacrifice, and humanity that make these stories unique. My approach is to create art that connects on an emotional level—whether the viewer is familiar with the military experience or not. I want my art to resonate with those who have lived through it and to offer others a glimpse into that world.

The process is deeply personal for me. Each piece I create carries a piece of the story, whether it’s from my own experiences or those of the men and women I’ve had the honor of working with. Combat Art is not just about what is seen—it’s about what is felt.
