The story:

There’s a look I remember—one I saw often, and wore myself more than once.

It’s not fear. Not quite.

It’s the moment between decisions. The quiet second when time slows and instinct hasn’t yet taken over.

A flash of humanity in a place built to strip it away.

We train to react, to move without hesitation- “in total disregard for his own safety…” or “instant and willing obedience to orders” .

But even in war, there are moments when you’re not just a Marine—you’re a human being trying to reconcile chaos with conscience. Sometimes that reconciliation takes decades, if at all.

But in that fragile space between action and stillness… you choose.

You choose to go forward, to protect, to survive.

Or maybe you don’t choose at all—and that has its own cost.

This isn’t just about combat.

It’s about reclaiming agency in the midst of the uncontrollable.

About taking the wheel when it would be easier to drift.

Will I let fear drive? Or will I?
