The Inspiration Behind the Piece:

We stood on the outskirts of a cornfield, within a taped-off 'observation area,' though true observation was elusive. The Raiders swiftly approached under the dim moonlight, their trucks' engines audible, and as they closed in, the flash and thunderous roar of their M240s shattered the night, 'knock, knock MFers.’

Almost as soon as they arrived, A rocket-propelled grenade struck one of the JLTVs. A contracted role-player, donned with simulated injuries consistent with an RPG blast replaced him in the scenario, and the Raider was pulled into the observation area with us. “Fuck” he grumbled, knowing he was going to have to watch from the bench. His Marines were now challenged with yet another task of competing priorities on the X.

I donned NVGs, seeking a clearer view, and a building bathed in light caught my attention. Following the beam skyward, I spotted the faint navigational light on the tail of an AC-130 circling above, painting targets for its deadly arsenal—105mm, 40mm, and 25mm GAU-12 cannons.

The Raider beside me, sensing my awe, whispered, 'the finger of God'—it made perfect sense.

Original size: 11x17 Charcoal
